This series contains materials concerning President Lyndon B. Johnson's efforts to promote peace by improving the standard of living worldwide and raising the status of man, through disarmament and arms limitations, through medical assistance to foreign countries, and through programs such as Food For Peace, Food For Freedom, the Peace Corps, the International Executive Service Corps (IESC), and the People-To-People exchange program.
Material concerning disarmament and arms limitations includes correspondence, reports and proposals concerning peace organizations and conferences. The series also includes reports to the President on underground nuclear testing and material on the observation of the anniversary of the signing of the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.
The series contains material concerning Public Law 480, the Agricultural Trade Development Assistance Act. These materials include operational charts, reports on the Food for Peace program established by P.L. 480, and on world food problems; proposals for alleviating world hunger; and plans for using U.S. surplus food. Materials also concern the origins, purposes, operations and accomplishments of the program.
Peace Corps material concerns the operations, activities, personnel, volunteers and programs of the Peace Corps. The series includes papers, reports and articles on the Peace Corps; and implementation of projects and training programs.
International Executive Service Corps (IESC) materials in the series include background information on the IESC; material on specific IESC projects; lists of directors of the IESC and invitees for meetings with the President; and a report on the first three years of the IESC.
The series includes materials from the general public suggesting ideas, plans, proposals, appeals, pamphlets, papers, articles, reports, and newspaper ads for solutions to achieving peace, especially concerning the war in Vietnam and conflict in the Middle East, particularly following the Middle East Crisis of 1967, also called the Six Day War and the Israel-Arab War.
